There’s been a lot of discussions on how can leaving comments improve your ranking all over the web recently, and many of those topics were explaining the techniques on posting comments on “Do Follow” blogs. I decided to give you some insider tips on what I found about this link (and Google pagerank) building technique.

It’s all related to that famous “nofollow” (and “nofollow external”) tag that was introduced by Google in early 2005 and was implemented in many CMS and blogging platforms since then. Basically the purpose of the “nofollow” tag is to tell some search engine that a hyperlink should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index. One of the main reasons for this was because of the very fast growing comment spam that affected everyone. However, over time, there has been a lot of discussions whether should blogs use nofollow or dofollow for comments and the discussion still goes on. It seems that is one of the things where we will never have a clear case, but rather a split among blog owners. Some will use “nofollow” on their blogs and some will not. Many bloggers feel that by not using “nofollow” tag they actually encourage people to post comments on their blogs.

It is important to make the difference between “nofollow” and “dofollow” in terms of how comments on both kind of blogs reflect to your site when it comes to traffic and ranking.

The “nofollow” blogs:

In first case, if the blog use “nofollow” on comments you are not going to get any link popularity passed to your own blog or url that you post in comments. The only benefit that you are going to get is that you might get traffic to your blog if someone find your post useful and interesting. No other ranking benefit (like Google pagerank etc.) will not be passed to your blog by commenting on these blogs. Make sure that you keep that on your mind next time that you post “Great Post!” on someone’s “nofollow” blog. To conclude: If you are commenting for sole benefit of your blog, make sure that your posts on “nofollow” blogs are useful and interesting.

The “dofollow” blogs:

These are blogs that don’t have the “nofollow” tag on their comments (meaning their comment signature and url that was posted in your comment). This means that all those links will be followed by search engines and end up on your site, passing pagerank and link value to your site. You are not only getting traffic like on “nofollow” blogs, but you also get your site and posts indexed on search engines much faster. So why bother commenting on “nofollow” blogs then if we get more benefits for the same thing? Well the answer is simple. Because You should always focus on blog that you are commenting on and the specific posts, and never be tricked into commenting for pagerank or free links. Why? Not only because that is called SPAM, but also since all “dofollow” blogs are often very moderated and you might easily be blacklisted if you post spammy comments. That will harm both your own reputation and your blog.

Here are some lists of “dofollow” blogs that you could comment on. Please understand that I am in no way endorsing the technique of posting comments for pagerank and link benefits only. Google and other major search engines already developed many algorithms which can easily determine whether links to your blog are those that are real quality links or those that are used for sole link building. Never participate in any kind of link building schemes, but try to focus on quality and useful info. Only that way your blog will be rewarded with many inbound links and only then will those links from comments be counted as the valuable ones.

Remember that you should never spam any of these blogs. You might however comment on topics on these blogs if you think that you have something interesting and useful to say and that way you will provide not only value to the blog that you comment on but also your blog. That is the idea and you should always stick to it if you want to have a successful and popular blog.
